Taking a break from studying and homework, so this is just a random journal. I'm also using this as an opportunity to practice typing on my new keyboard cover because I'm sick of cleaning the oils off the keys and little dust and crumbs getting in the cracks. It's so weird...

Anyway, I picked up a couple of video playthroughs of The Evil Within, that survival horror video game directed by the same person who directed Resident Evil. I don't know too much about the RE series. It has more plot holes than Silent Hill has holes in its walls and floors. The reason I picked up The Evil Within was because a Youtuber with a passion for Playstation games said it wasn't bad whereas everyone bashed it, so I decided to give it a watch. I sure as heck am not picking it up when I don't even have a television in my house, let alone a gaming console.

So I watch the playthrough for a bit, and I come to the realization that nothing in the game is going to make sense. There's nothing to even spoil. The plot's so bad it's not worth talking about. The character motivations are awful, the gameplay can be annoyingly bland, and the enemy AI can sometimes be unfair.

If you haven't heard or seen The Evil Within, the main character is a guy named Sebastian Castellanos which I will admit is an awesome name for a main character. He has the personality of cardboard. Sebastian has two little leads that he gets tagging along with him. The one I'll go into is Joseph Oda, his partner in the police/detective force. Joseph also has the personality of cardboard, but what I think makes him bearable in this survival horror is that he's actually not that bad. He follows you around, tries his best not to get hurt, actually aims for monsters that are close to Sebastian rather than taking pot shots, rarely misses unless it's your fault, and even picks up melee weapons and can one-hit KO some of them that are attacking you, a thing that most AIs don't really do for a main character--especially in survival horror. I'm looking at you, Sheva. *Cough* Why won't you duck when you're in the line of fire?

And as bland as the environments and characters were, there were moments in the game where I thought, "Hey, Joseph isn't a bad guy. He's cool. Sebastian really cares about this guy. Maybe because it's such a grim place, but I'll buy it." And I paid more attention to their interactions, and by the end of a certain glasses-retrieving scene, I just thought...

These guys need to furiously make out.

*Sniff* I don't know why it had to be these bland losers. I don't even solidly ship Hetalia couples, but these two made me wish they made it out of that terrible mind-fudgery and get a room together. And what makes it most ill-fitting of all is that Sebastian is/was married! But I still want it to happen, and I'm angry at myself for wishing these two would get together, the two people with cardboard personalities and little to no development. Stupid Joseph and his cool black glasses and cool black gloves...and Sebastian for his inability to gag at the smell of entrails...Ah...I'm a pathetic person... OTL

I have admit that this was a nice journal. It made me laugh at how you say the characters are bland, but you want them to get together. Oh, the joys of video games ~!
