Silence was deafening. It ate at the sense more than any bloodcurdling noise or agonizing scream. It invoked fear.

Right now was one of those times.

You held your breath and listened. It was so quiet you could hear your own pulse pounding into your skull. You'd ready your weapon, but that would only make them cautious of you. You would have to wait.

Come on…

A drop of sweat trickled down from your forehead irritating your skin. You wanted to wipe it away, but the wrong movement would give away your vulnerability.

Crack!

There it is!

You cocked your gun and brought it right in front of your face and fired. It didn't even matter if you saw your target or not. What mattered was that you had to fire it.

The monster screamed and writhed in pain from the sizzling bullet that was lodged in the middle of its forehead. Taking opportunity of its injury, you took out your machete and began to hack away at the decaying flesh of the monster until it stirred no longer.

Panting and hot from the adrenaline, you broke the silence that flooded the entire city. They would know you were here. You had to find the others.

-----

You perked your ears up and surveyed the noise.

It's coming from the west, you thought. They're over there.

With not a moment to lose, you grabbed your equipment and began to run towards the hospital.

So they were trying to look for some supplies…

"Don't worry guys," you panted and kept your pace up. "I've got everything you need."

You passed by some cars that had broken down and kept your eyes peeled for any suspicious movements. There were posters and fliers strewn all over the floors. No matter where you went, you always saw one within a half-mile radius. They had been printed in multiple languages, broadcasted over national news and radio stations, blogged over the Internet…all to warn you guys.

The warning came too late.

Or maybe it came incorrectly.

Ever since the countries had agreed to go with America's idea to engineer humans to build up resistance to ultra-violet rays, you had noticed changes. People were starting to act strange…then they got crazy…really crazy.

Perhaps it was a virus. It was meant to be tested on a few individuals, but something had gone wrong with the process. It was never meant to be airborne or any form of contagion by physical contact.

How many people had they estimated to be immune to this Veraterrus* virus? One percent? Wait. That couldn't have been it. In their latest—and last—study, they added a decimal point. Fantastic.

*(A.N.: It's a play on the Latin words for "earth" and "man." You know, like "Globaman?")

Even if there were others that were unaffected by the virus, there was no guarantee that they were still alive. You and Vash and Lili had only survived this long thanks to Vash's expertise in firearms and survival skills. You had picked up a thing or two from him since the virus began to spread.

The hospital was growing into view over the decaying buildings. They weren't too far away now.

The silence was broken agai—

"___________!" Lili cried and ran to you giving you a tight hug.

"Lili!" you gasped and set down your gun. "Where did you guys go?"

Lili stared at you with her large green eyes that so resemble her brother's.

"We were camping out at the hospital," she answered quickly. "Big Brother told me to wait, but I saw you, and I thought it would be just as safe."

You felt something wet on your short and bent down to Lili's eye level.

"I thought you left us like the rest," Lili sniffed. "I don't like this anymore…I want to go home…"

"Lili…" you whispered and wiped away your friend's tears. "Don't worry. I'm right here. We'll get through this together. I promise."

You dug into your pocket and held up something to her.

"Look," you said. "I've copied the data we'll need to get out of here. It's very simple. There's a place that's—"

"_____________!" Vash exclaimed and gave you a hug as well. "Damn it, __________! We thought we really lost you!"

"I'm here," you chuckled and gave both Zwingli siblings a hug. "Let's get out of here. I've got an idea as to where we need to go."

Vash and Lili looked at each other and nodded before giving you their full attention.

"We need to head to the east," you said pointing in the direction opposite of the setting sun. "There's supposed to be a camp meant for survivors and experiments bent on finding a cure for the Veraterrus virus."

"Sounds a lot better than sticking around here," Vash said. "Let's go."

"Yes," Lili agreed.

-----

The journey was a silent one save for your footsteps. For whatever reason, you weren't as afraid travelling in the dark than when it was daytime. The night brought a sort of solace that allowed you to stay focused on your goals rather than looking for possible viabilities and signs of other survivors.

"It's a nice night," you said wanting to hear something other than the silence of the night. "It's a nice temperature, isn't it?"

"Yeah," Lili agreed.

Vash nodded.

"Vash," you said, "do you think we'll be able to get through this?"

"We have to," your friend said. "Otherwise, why would be here? What point would there be to walking if we didn't want this to happen?"

"Just curious," you chuckled to yourself.

The silence returned again.

-----

You woke up. Maybe it was your imagination getting the better of you, but you couldn't be to sure.

"Vash, Lili…" you whispered. You brought your gun from under your rolled-up jacket and prepared to cock it.

Silence.

It was deafening.

"Vash…" you whispered again. "Lili…"

No answer.

Shit.

They were gone again.

You would have to find them in the morning.

-----

The encampment was just ahead. So far, there hadn't been any strong encounters. A monster here and there, but no hoards or large numbers. Nothing you couldn't handle.

Still…you wished Vash and Lili had stayed. Your mind must've been playing tricks on you again.

Get it together, ____________, you told yourself and smacked your face to snap you out of your stupor.

"______________, what the hell is wrong with you?" Vash asked giving you a strange look.

"Watch your mouth, Vash," you chuckled. "Lili's right here."

"I don't mind," Lili smiled timidly.

"It's not like there's anything else to listen to out here," Vash snorted.

"Yeah…" you said sadly. You turned around to face the Zwinglis.

"Hey, guys…" you began.

They were gone again. You let out a heavy sigh and continued walking.

-----

"Big Brother?" Lili asked timidly.

"What is it, Lili?" Vash said looking up from polishing his knife.

Lili looked over the tall barricade into the lawless wilderness. The city was barely a speck into the distance.

"Do you think ___________ is still out there?"

Vash stopped working. He gave his little sister a reassuring smile and looked at the ruined aftermath outside.

"I'm sure she is," he said. "I have a feeling she'll be here soon."

-----

"We've got another one!"

You squinted as lights began to pour out of the heavily gated doors. Your heart nearly skipped a beat when you saw who was waiting for you.

"Vash! Lili!"

"____________!" the Zwinglis cried.

The three of you rejoiced after being back together again. It felt good to hear their real voices again.

"How have you been holding up?" Vash asked and led you inside the safety of the gates.

You smiled. "Just fine," you replied. "I've been keeping myself company from time to time."

So I wouldn't say the reader is crazy as much as just lonely. To keep herself company, she pretends her friends are there with her, but under certain circumstances, it gets harder to pretend. Did I get that right? Wonderful story, it's really interesting.
