~Chapter 19~

There was still the debate of whether or not keeping your mouth shut was a good thing or not spinning inside your head.

There’s no way Lukas was really telling the truth when he said something like that, you thought to yourself. He’s got it all wrong, and besides, he’s a dragon. He couldn’t possibly know the significance of kissing another person—and a human at that.

You groaned and shuffled around in your spot. It had been an extremely long day. Lukas had said you would need all the rest you could get because there was no telling when you would be able to stop and take a break again. However, no matter how hard you shut your eyes, or how many imagined dragons you had counted flying overhead, or how often you shifted into a different sleeping position, you couldn’t bring yourself to fall asleep.

By the gods of Eliatha, I can’t sleep! you miserably thought. Ever since that little incidence that evening, it had been impossible to say anything to Lukas. It wasn’t that you wanted the kiss, oh no. It was more along the lines of not being able to find anything left to say after he told you to keep your mouth shut.

I’m only keeping my mouth shut because there’s nothing to say, you tried to convince yourself. I haven’t been hearing anymore voices, and there haven’t been any signs of Emil so all we can do to pass the time is to continue walking. Yes. That is what we must do.

Then, you sneezed. Even beyond the force field, the winds of Dragonfall still blew as violently as before. Lukas wasn’t a dragon, and to make things even more awkward, he was curled up right next to you.

“Are you still cold?” you heard him softly ask. His very breath tickled your ear.

“N-No, something just brushed against my nose,” you lied hoping the dragon would let the subject drop.

“You’re shivering,” he noticed much to your ill luck.

“It’s nothing to worry about,” you replied. “I’ll be fine.”

“I can hug you tighter,” Lukas offered. “That’s what you humans do when it’s unbearably cold, don’t you? The closer you are in contact with one another, the more heat becomes exchanged between two people.”

“No!” you quickly refused and pulled your cloak closer to your body hoping it would be enough to shelter you from the winds. “I’ll be fine, I swear. It’s probably because Emil isn’t with me to talk to anymore, or it’s just that we’re in this foreign environment.”

____________, you idiot! What nonsense are you spewing out?!

“If it helps you fall asleep, you can talk to me,” Lukas offered.

You couldn’t help but make a face. This side of Lukas was incredibly strange to say the least. All this time, you had to put up with his arrogant and brash commentary, complete inconsideration, and nearly getting your head bitten off by his dragon-sized temper.

“Lukas, are you sick?” you suddenly blurted out without any restraint to your curiosity.

“What makes you say that?” Lukas asked from behind you. You nearly flinched when you felt his hand grip onto your wrist.

By the gods, _____________, calm down! you screamed in your head. He’s a dragon! He’s not going to do anything a human would necessarily do!

“You’re acting strange lately,” you answered in a hushed voice.

“As in…?”

You rolled your eyes. “You’ve been saying my name lately, you carry me even as a human, you ask me how I’m feeling, and you even…you even offered…to kiss me.

Lukas paused for a few seconds. Then, he gave you his replies to your speculations.

“I’ll respond to those concerns in order, alright?” he said. “Firstly, I’m not saying your name because I’ve grown attached to you; I’m saying it because once my brother gets used to me saying your name, he will finally call me Big Brother.”

Is that what that’s all about? you wondered feeling somewhat disappointed.

“Next, I’m carrying you because if I lose you, I’ll have to wait or go back to retrieve you. Either way, we lose time, so I took it upon myself to make our lives both easier. Plus I don’t have to hear your insolent complaining and consistent whining.”

“I do not whine,” you protested.

“For someone who doesn’t whine, she sure has quite the tongue,” Lukas threw back making you clamp your lips together in annoyance.

“The reason I’ve been asking you how you feel is because if you are experiencing any more of those strange episodes, it might give us a clue as to where my brother is located. Also, I can’t have you dying on me. I can’t afford to lose my brother when he’s essentially all I have left in this world.”

“What about the others at Eldur Mountain?” you asked. “What about Mathias? Doesn’t he mean something to you, or is he nothing more than a human being just because he can’t change back into a dragon? He can still understand you after all.”

“The Golden Sentinel and the Eye of the Topaz Blizzard are dragons that were just there,” Lukas replied. “I’ve had encounters with them in the past, but they aren’t important anymore. As for Mathias…he’s on a level of impossibility that I can’t comprehend. In a matter of speaking, he’s something of an acquaintance, and yet, he’s someone who I’ve tried not to rely on since his disappearance.”

You blinked. “How did the two of you become friends?”

To your surprise, Lukas let out a dry laugh. “We aren’t necessarily friends, though I’d highly assume Mathias would say we are. We just happen to always be in the same place at the same time.”

“Is that why you didn’t apologize to him when you bite his arm, then?” you asked.

The dragon remained silent as before. It was a while before he spoke up again.

“As for the final thing about the kiss, I was just joking.”

“Wh-Wh-Wha…?”

“I thought it would be amusing to know how you would react if I offered something so precious as a kiss,” Lukas chuckled over your trembling body.

“I’m surprised you even took the offer to heart,” the dragon continued in a playfully taunting tone. “Of course I know what a kiss really means to humans such as yourself; I know what love is, after all. It even got you to shut your mouth for the entire day.”

“Y-You tricked me!” you exclaimed feeling more than upset about that empty offer. Then again, what was the point of getting so worked up about it? It wasn’t like you had actually looked forward to him giving you a kiss…had you?

“Ha,” Lukas chuckled. “You should see the look on your face. You’re blushing.”

Upon hearing him say that, you tucked your limbs inside your body and buried your neck deep within your cloak so the mischievous dragon couldn’t look at your expression. What in the world was up with Lukas, anyway? Did he seriously take pleasure in seeing you get so flustered like this?

Wait a minute! There was no way he could see you blushing, could he?

“Lukas, you’re lying,” you huffed.

“About what?”

“About me blushing!”

“Where’d you get an idea like that?”

“It’s too dark. It would be impossible to see the color of my face.”

“Why’d you think I was looking at your face?”

“How else would you be able to see if I was blushing?”

“I didn’t look at your face if that’s what you were worried about,” Lukas replied. “I simply went on the speculation that because your heart beat was getting faster than normal, there would be blood rising to your cheeks.”

You frowned trying to contain your composure. “What makes you believe my cheeks is where the blood went? I could have been getting angry, and the blood could have been rising to my head.”

“You aren’t,” Lukas pointed out much to your annoyance. He was telling the truth. “If you were mad, you would have burst out shouting things and moving away from me, but you didn’t. I’ve been noticing the little things you do, ___________.”

He placed an emphasis on your name. If the dragon could really hear your heart beating, then there was nothing you could do to prevent it from beating faster. Damn it all, he knew how to play with your emotions.

“By the way, human, I was lying about claiming to know you were blushing or not,” Lukas suddenly confessed making your eye twitch.

“Why would you do something as inhumane like that?” you hissed.

“Because I’m not a human—not technically,” Lukas merely replied. “And I wanted to see if I could get an entertaining reaction out of you.”

“Gh—Why?

“Because by being annoyed with me, you won’t want to spend any more time with my brother when we save him. If you remain with him, that means I’ll always be by your side.”

That’s a terrible reason to make me annoyed… you thought to yourself.

“I was lying about that, too.”

“I swear to Eliatha, if everything you’ve been saying to me were all lies, what part of your constant teasing was true?!” you cried now inching away from the intolerable dragon.

“One truth that I can undoubtedly confess to you is that I take pleasure out of seeing you get irritated. It’s more enjoyable when I know I’m the one causing you to become annoyed,” Lukas answered.

You snorted. “I’ve had enough of your lies to last a lifetime. Goodnight, Disastrous King of Stupid Filth.”

“What was that now?” Lukas spoke up. He didn’t sound very happy. That made you happy.

Then, you sneezed.
